Ants

Ants are insects that organize and live in groups creating their own society. We usually find them in home and business areas, especially where there is food. They are a major problem as they enter food storage areas and catering areas and call into question the cleanliness and hygiene of these areas.

In Greece we mainly meet the following two types of ants.

Pharaoh ants – Monomorium Pharaonis

The ant Monomorium pharaonis (Pharaoh's ant) is usually found in home kitchens and in hospital wards. They are particularly small between 2 and 6mm. Their color is almost transparent yellow.

It has been proven that in hospital settings, if they have access to soiled sheets or contaminated dressings they can transmit:

  • Salmonella
  • Pseudomonas
  • Staphylococcus
  • Clostridium

Black ant – Lasius Niger

This species is the most common ant species in Greece. Its size is small, between 3 and 5mm and its color as it says and its name is black. It is found mainly in rotting wood, logs and on the ground, even under bricks and pots. Wherever it is found it creates very large colonies.

Their spread is fast and global and is mainly enhanced through the international trade of plants, pots and planting beds.

Their presence creates a nuisance as when they are around the houses they will usually go inside to look for food.

Dealing with and exterminating the ant population is a painstaking process. We at Biodynamics apply the following methods to deal with the ant population.

  • Use of bait gel, which is carried into the nests to kill the queens and workers there.
  • Spraying to deal with passing ants.

The specialized staff of Biodynamics always uses certified and safe chemical preparations strictly following the manufacturer's safety data sheets and approvals.
