Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are blood-sucking insects, i.e. they feed on blood, and various species are found all over the world. Their body has a dimension of 3 to 6 mm and they have long legs. They are responsible for the transmission of many serious diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.

In the breeding phase females give birth up to 10 times. Starting the first time they can lay from 50 to up to 500 eggs and less every subsequent time. It only takes 2 weeks for an egg to become a perfect insect. Their eggs are usually found on the surface of even a small amount of water. Only fertilized female mosquitoes bite humans to feed.

To understand how quickly they multiply, consider how 5 generations of mosquitoes can give us 50 million mosquitoes!
In our country, the types of mosquitoes we encounter are the following.

Aedes mosquito – Aedes Aegypti

This type of mosquito appeared in Greece in recent years and is the well-known "tiger mosquito". It is responsible for carrying the West Nile virus that causes encephalitis.

It is a very aggressive type of mosquito that is active and bites during the day and this is because they have adapted to living in areas with human presence and activity such as in rural areas.

They can breed even in small spots with relatively clear water.

Anopheles sp

This particular type of mosquito is directly related to humans as they almost always suck blood from humans. For reproduction, they usually prefer shallow fresh water or brackish water exposed to the sun and ideally with surface vegetation. That is why we find them at the edges of lakes, swamps, irrigation networks, etc. Its radius of action reaches up to 3.5 kilometers

House mosquito – Culex sp

This particular mosquito, like the previous one, is directly related to humans as it selects and feeds on human blood almost every time. We encounter it from dusk onwards and although its radius of action can reach 22.5 kilometers, it usually prefers to move within a radius of about 800 meters.

To control the population of mosquitoes both in professional and domestic areas, we choose the special sprays in the form of a cloud as well as special anti-mosquito devices.
